Ninety Nine Years Old!!!

We want to say a very special Happy Birthday to L.J.'s grandmother, Frances Harrison who turns NINETY NINE today! Wow!!

This amazing woman is an inspiration to everyone who knows her. Her mind is sharp, her body is strong and it amazes me to think about the history that she has witnessed with her own eyes. In 1910 when she was born a postage stamp was only 2 cents, a gallon of gas was only 7 cents, and Thomas Edison introduced "Talkies" or what we now know as movies.

The picture above is her in the first grade and the one bellow is with her parents & brothers & sisters. She told me recently that the house behind them is still standing today. She is in the back row 4th from the left. It was taken in 1937.
This next pictures was taken in 1932, what a beautiful woman!

She was married to Leamon Harrison on January 12, 1934.

This is her family in 1973. Back row left to right is Wilson, Ann, Alice and Carlton. Front row is Frances, Leamon and Mattie Kate.

I have a quick funny story to share about Grandmama. She would come out to Arizona regularly to visit and this one particular visit in 2006 we were out at the ranch. She started talking about wanting to ride a horse. I'm not sure if she had ever ridden a horse before that or not but she wanted to and there was no changing her mind.

So Chester, L.J. & Leon helped her on to this horse and walked her around the pasture. Of course we all grabbed our cameras and video cameras! It's not every day you see a 96 year old on a horse, right? She loved it and even rode again the next summer she was visiting.

One thing Grandmama is known for is her home made cards. She sends them out for birthdays along with Easter, Halloween and any other holiday. We love getting them in the mail from her! Here are a few of my favorites, the details are amazing!

She sent us this one when Lyla was born. I love it!

So this past weekend, in her honor we made our own birthday cards for her. I've never been very good at making cards or scrapbooking but I try and have some supplies. The girls and I pulled out every thing we had and went to work. This first one is Luke's. Pretty simple and just right for his attention span.

Next is Ally's......

And here is Emily's......

L.J. even got into the fun too. On the computer in PhotoShop he made a collage of pictures that we had of her. We had it printed as a 5x7 picture and used that for the front. At the bottom there is a metal plaque that says , "Life is not a destination but a journey." I hope she likes them!

Grandmama has always lived in North Carolina and until very recently she would travel out to Arizona to visit us and stay for several months at a time. We know how blessed we are that she was able to do this and for us and our children to have so many memories with her. I will always cherish these next pictures of my kids with her last summer.

Again....HAPPY BIRTHDAY Grandmama! We love you!!!

  1. How awesome! You know, I've always thought that Ally looked just like you, but she does resemble her great-grandma in those younger pictures!
