Luke turned 4 in February and he was SO EXCITED for his birthday! We had planned an earlier party in the month to combine it with two of my nephews that also have February birthdays. We were supposed to go to the train park in Scottsdale but unfortunately that day is rained – hard! We moved the party to Drew’s house and still had a good time. Here are two cakes that Theresa made for the boys.
This is the only good picture I got of him opening presents.
After that he talked about wanting a piñata for his “real birthday.” So I took him to Wal-mart and let him pick one out.
We invited Dean’s kids over and they all had fun beating up on Spiderman. Luke was also very excited to open more presents!
This next picture makes me laugh every time I see it. We had bought Luke a bike and L.J. is bringing it in from the garage. Luke was SO EXCITED to see it! His reaction was priceless.
He got right on it with his new backpack and said he was ready to ride his bike to school.
Luke is absolutely the sweetest, funniest, silliest boy I’ll ever know. He makes me laugh every day and I love being his Mom!
Some of the memorable quotes from Luke are:
- We’ve started calling Lyla “Little Lady” for a nickname. One time I asked Luke to do something and he said, “OK big lady!” I did laugh ~ a little.
- One night I was cooking dinner and he walked into the kitchen and said, “Mom, there’s a yummy smell in my nose.” He’s such a sweet talker!
- He loves to play the Wii and one night while saying his prayer he said, “Please bless that Jesus can be proud of me and that he can come over tomorrow and play Wii Play with me all afternoon.” I was touched and giggled at the same time.
- Last Sunday I was subbing in Primary so I decided to tell him that I was going to go to Primary too. He asked me if I was coming to his class and I said, “No, I’m going to help with another class this time.” Then he said, “So you're a Super Hero?” I love that he notices my superior abilities!
And then just a few weeks later he gave his first talk. I wish I could say it went well but not so much. He didn’t understand why I was trying to get him to practice it during the week so he wouldn’t. Then he really enjoyed hearing his voice in a microphone and got a little carried away. What can I expect, he’s a 4 year old boy. There will be more chances to redeem himself.
Something Luke has finally mastered is potty training!!!!!!!!! He did get this done before his birthday at least. My theory with Luke was to let it happen when it happened and not stress about it. I’d much rather clean up a dirty diaper than a mess all over the floor, clothes, etc. At times I would strongly encourage him but it didn’t seem to do any good. Sometimes I did start to wonder if he was ever going to come around but it did finally work.
I learned that without a doubt every child is different. With the girls they loved stickers and rewards for going potty. Luke didn’t care. We tried all kinds of charts & rewards but it never worked. The girls loved it when we all celebrated every time they made it to the potty. Luke got embarrassed by the extra attention.
One afternoon I was in my bedroom folding the laundry when I heard the bathroom door open and close. Then I heard the toilet seat lift up. Lyla was asleep and Ally & Emily were at school so I knew it had to have been Luke in there. I wasn’t sure if I should go in or not. I decided to just see what would happen. Several minutes later Luke (naked from the waist down) comes into my room and tells me that he has a surprise for me. I couldn’t believe it!
I was so happy I almost cried but tried to act very cool about it for him. I told him I was so proud of him and he said, “Yep, now I’m all grown up.” He has never had an accident since!
One thing we had promised Luke was a trip to the train park when he started going potty. Luke LOVES trains!
This next picture isn’t very good but I got the most important part. While we were riding the train I had turned around just in time to see Luke holding hands with both Ally & Emily. I thought it was so sweet. He loves these girls and calls them his girlfriends. He’s pretty sweet to Lyla too and tells her he is so happy to see her when ever she wakes up from her nap. With all these girls in his life I think he’s going to be the best boyfriend/husband ever!
For as tender as he his, he is still a very normal active little boy. He loves to pretend to be Spiderman, Superman, a monster, a dragon, or a rock star. I’ve learned that shorts without pockets are useless and blankets make the best capes for flying. He is so much fun to hang out with!
I am always going to be so eternally grateful for the opportunity to be Luke’s mom!! He is my Super Hero!
So cute! What a fun write up about Luke. I love those cakes!
