As you might know (if you have Facebook) that I won 1st Place in my school speech competition and 3rd place in the district competition. It all started like this: I had to write about something or someone patriotic that was 2-3 minutes long. So I wrote about three patriotic women, Pauline Cushman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Deborah Sampson. I preformed it in front of my class and Mrs. Futrell chose me to preform in front of the 6th grade. Then me and three other kids in 6th grade and 4 5th graders preformed in front of the 4 judges from Luke Air Force Base .
I won First Place out of eight kids (5th/6th division) and would move on to district! Here I am thanking the judges.
I won a medal and a plaque.
At the district competition kids from 16 different schools preformed their speeches in front of 4 judges. They gave out certificates of participation for everyone with trophies to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place and plaques to 4th and 5th place.
I won 3rd Place!
Here I am with the other Foothills Elementary winner for the 7th/8th division, Ciara St.Clair.
Here is the speech that I wrote:
Some people think that men get all the glory. No they don’t! Not all women stay at home cooking and cleaning. Look at Pauline Cushman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Deborah Sampson. If they cooked and cleaned instead of what they did, America would not be the same. Welcome judges, teachers, parents, and fellow contestants. My name is Ally Crandell, and I don’t think that women get enough recognition.
Pauline Cushman was an amazing actress that spent most of her life helping the North in the Civil War. While she was working for a playhouse in Kentucky two confederate soldiers came and offered her $300 dollars to make a toast to Jefferson Davis, leader of the confederacy. She accepted and was fired as a confederate sympathizer. After that, she was offered the chance to become a union spy. Again she accepted and followed the confederate army. Claiming to be looking for her brother, she was given much information about attacks and camps. She supplied this information back to the union. She was captured and sentenced to hang because General Bragg caught her with secret papers. At last, the union soldiers came and saved her from her hanging.
Another great woman was Eleanor Roosevelt, she was the greatest woman of her century. Even before she became a first lady she was a humanitarian civic leader, she volunteered for the Red Cross and much more. Mrs. Roosevelt was the first activist first lady. She had a daily column in the newspaper that kept the public up-to-date on the White House policies, created the NYA, National Youth Administration, and worked for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Deborah Sampson was the first woman to go to war. But in 1782, generals would not take women so she disguised herself as her deceased brother, Robert Shurtliff. She served for the Continental Army in the American Revolution. She treated her own wounds because she didn’t want her gender to be known. Only when she had a brain fever she let a doctor help her and was discharged from the army. When she was discharged she published a newspaper, The Female Review that told about her experience at war. She taught school so all kids could have an education and gave lectures about the war so the people would know what it was like to be in the war.
If women like Eleanor Roosevelt, Pauline Cushman, and Deborah Sampson only cooked and cleaned instead of spying for the union, helping others, or going out to war, America would not be the same. Because of these women I can be a spy, a volunteer, a soldier, or anything I want to be when I grow up. Why don’t you say thank you to a woman that has made your America better. Thank you.
