In October we were able to take Ruby & Lyla to visit our family in North Carolina. We had a great time visiting everyone and of course showing off the little girls.
This is how Lyla spent most of the 5 hour plane ride. Thank goodness!
This was Ruby for most of the trip.
For the most part we relaxed and visited with L.J.’s Aunt Mattie & Uncle Nelson, Aunt Ann and Uncle Carlton and his girlfriend Glen. And of course the main reason for our trip was to see Grandmama Harrison who had her 100th birthday in September. L.J.’s mom had been there for about a month so we flew out as soon as Ruby could travel and then came home with her.
One day we went to the beach. We ate lunch at a place called The Crab Shack and it was delicious. I’m not usually big on sea food but when I come to NC, I like it. There’s just something about eating fish in a desert that bothers me. How fresh can it really be? Of course Uncle Carlton had to say, “You can buy frozen fish in North Carolina too.” Anyway, I had tilapia and flounder which I loved. I tried scallops for the first and last time. And one night Uncle Carlton made his fish stew which was really good. Every meal had hush puppies included and L.J. couldn’t get enough of them! One night Lyla called them “cookie doggies.”
Lyla did NOT like the ocean! This girl does not even like to wash her hair in the bath tub.
We did a little sight seeing in the big town of La Grange. This is where L.J. lived for most of his childhood so we drove around and looked at old familiar places.
Ken’s Grill has the absolute best BBQ anywhere! North Carolina BBQ is actually very different from most other places. It’s a vinegar base rather than tomato and has a very distinct flavor. Ken’s only serves BBQ on Wednesdays & Saturdays and this day, the line was out the door! Their hush puppies were our favorite too.
The Piggly Wiggly is a real grocery store. So cute!
A trip to La Grange is not complete without dinner at the Sandpiper! It’s a Harrison family tradition. This is Grandmama's favorite restaurant. It’s very casual and friendly and the parking lot is packed every night.
This is the house L.J. lived in when he was young. He hates mowing the lawn to this day because of the huge front & back yards he had to take care of back then.
Then we had fun just hanging out at Grandmama's. Pecans had already started to fall so Lyla helped Grandma one afternoon. She didn’t want to stop even after it was too dark to see.
Here she is with her loot.

Sweet sisters…
Lyla was excited to see Aunt Mattie again after a few days. She kept asking, “Where’s my Mattie?”
We could not get her to come inside during the day.
She also did NOT want to pose for pictures. She is definitely two!
My favorite part of the trip was getting pictures of Ruby with her Great Grandmother who shares the same birthday, exactly 100 years apart. That’s just crazy.
And of course some Four Generation pictures too.
This trip was also the first time L.J.’s mom was able to see Ruby. She had to go to NC just before Ruby was born. She was very excited to finally get to see her.
Ruby let us know when she was done taking pictures.
It was a very special trip and we had a great time!
Oooh so wonderful! I'm so glad you got to go. Lyla is so cute and what a wonderful way to honor great grandma. :) I love the look on Lyla's face in a couple of those pics and you look great!
