No More Adenoides for Luke

Luke had to have some out patient surgery today. It was a pretty routine Myringotomy and Adenoidectomy. That sounds much worse than it is. Basically he had his adenoids taken out and tubes put in his ears. He did amazingly well and not even one tear was shed (by Luke or Mom & Dad).

A few months ago I started to notice that he was not hearing very well. He was holding toys up to his ear when he played, was always asking us to turn up the TV, and saying "What?" a lot when we talked to him. I finally decided that we needed to check things out one day when we were at the park. I was calling for him and he didn't turn to look at me. I got closer and closer and called him several times and he never responded. I was finally right behind him calling his name and he never turned. When I put my hand on his shoulder and he flinched I knew something was not right.

First we went to the pediatrician to look for wax build up but when every thing was clear we made an appointment with an ENT. He had a hearing test and it turned out that he really couldn't hear very well. It turns out that the adenoides were so swollen & impacted and there was tons of fluid in his head that couldn't drain. He also couldn't breathe through his nose at all.

So today the doctor removed the adenoides, cleaned every thing out and then the tubes will help with keeping it drained. He wasn't too happy when we tried to put him in the little gown, but he didn't put up too much of a fuss. He was just fine when the nurse promised him a purple popsicle when he was done. Here's a picture just before he went to the surgery room.

They gave him a little gas to put him to sleep before putting in the IV. It was actually a very short procedure and within 30 minutes the doctor came to tell us every thing went perfectly. He was still asleep when we got to go back and see him.
We would talk to him and his eyes would flutter around. When LJ mentioned that Uncle Andrew was at the house and wanted to see him when we came home his eyes immediately popped open. A few minutes later he said, "I go home." That was it! No crying, no fussing, nothing. He was ready to go. Here he is drinking a little apple juice before we left.

On the way home he did get nauseous and started throwing up. We called the nurse and she said that was a normal side effect of the anesthesia. He threw up again later and seemed very tired. After a good long nap on the couch he woke up and was as good as new. He was running around the house and talking non stop. We went to go pick up the girls from Dean & Tracy's house and he was so excited to see every one. It was as if nothing had happened today at all.
He's been so happy all afternoon and seems to have a little more energy than normal (if that's possible). We asked him several times if his ears hurt and he always said no. The cutest thing was tonight when I was changing his diaper in his bedroom. Lyla was in the high chair out in the kitchen jabbering away. His bedroom & the kitchen are not very close to each other and he said, "That sounds like Lyla." I was so happy to hear him say that!
Thank you every one who remembered Luke in your prayers and called today to see how he was doing. We couldn't be more happy with the results and we're so grateful to be able to help him feel better.
